Local Government Minister Bob Neill has accused councils of “complacency” over the collection of waste during the Christmas and New Year period, with rubbish piled up in some streets.
He was particularly scathing of the leader of Labour-run Exeter council Pete Edwards, who said that he didn’t see the issue as a major problem.
However, Mr Neill need look no further than his own Conservative-controlled back yard to find evidence of complacency.
For weeks ChislehurstNews readers have complained of no-shows by Bromley Council bin men. And this was the sight at the Recycling Bank off Chislehurst High Street on Monday, with bottles, tin cans and even old mattresses piled by overflowing recycling bins.
Residents have contacted Bromley Council about this but so-far haven’t had any response. Let’s hope Mr Neill has better luck.
NEWS UPDATE: The impromptu rubbish dump off the High Street has finally been cleared.

Hi!
I am looking to speak to anyone who is critical of Bromley council’s new refuse collection programme for the next Bromley Times. And I wonder if i could please use this picture too?
Anyone interested can call me on 0208 269 7009… Please pass it on, thanks
Tim
To be fair to the bin men, a lot were doing double shifts with what bin rounds they could manage and snow clearance works before Christmas. With the snows and the Christmas/New Year interruptions I think they have done well.
The Chislehurst High Street recycle bank, however, (aka: refuse transfer station/fly tipping site) is a disgrace which has been drawn to LBB’s attention more than once.
Cleared? Well possibly. But as of this evening bagged rubbish is piling up again.
